Megakaryocytes

Megakaryocytes are large cells found in the bone marrow, responsible for producing platelets, which are small cell fragments vital for blood clotting and wound healing. They develop from stem cells and grow very big, often up to 50-100 micrometers in diameter. When mature, megakaryocytes extend tiny projections called proplatelets into blood vessels, releasing thousands of platelets into the bloodstream. This process maintains proper blood clotting ability and prevents excessive bleeding, making megakaryocytes essential for vascular health and wound repair.
