Mediterranean Fever Syndrome

Mediterranean Fever Syndrome, also known as Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), is an inherited condition common in people from Mediterranean regions. It causes recurrent episodes of fever and inflammation, leading to pain, swelling, and tenderness in areas like the abdomen, chest, or joints. These episodes typically last 1-3 days and occur unpredictably. The condition is caused by genetic mutations affecting the immune system's regulation of inflammation. While episodes are painful, long-term complications like kidney damage can occur if untreated. FMF is usually managed with anti-inflammatory medications, which help reduce attacks and prevent complications.
