Medieval Irish history

Medieval Irish history spans from around 400 to 1600 AD, marked by a decentralized society of Gaelic clans and regional kingdoms. Ireland was largely fragmented, with local rulers—kings and chieftains—holding power independently. Monasteries became centers of learning and culture, fostering art, scholarship, and Christianity. The period saw numerous conflicts, alliances, and invasions, including Viking raids from the 8th century. Over time, external pressures and internal divisions led to the gradual decline of native Gaelic dominance, culminating in English efforts to extend control, which significantly shaped Ireland’s political and social landscape into the early modern era.
