Medieval Civilians

Medieval civilians were ordinary people living during the Middle Ages, outside of the ruling nobility and knights. They included farmers, artisans, merchants, and town residents who worked and contributed to society’s daily life. They often lived in villages or towns and relied on agriculture, crafts, and trade for their livelihoods. Despite lacking political power, their roles were vital in maintaining the economy and community stability. Their experiences varied by region and social status, but they collectively formed the backbone of medieval society, enduring challenges like warfare, disease, and economic changes while striving to sustain their families and communities.
