Mechanics' Institutes

Mechanics' Institutes were educational organizations established in the 19th century to provide adult education, particularly in science, technology, and skilled trades, to working-class adults. Originating in Britain and spreading to other countries, they aimed to improve citizens' literacy, technical knowledge, and social mobility through classes, lectures, libraries, and workshops. These institutes served as accessible learning centers during a time when formal education was limited for many. Over time, many evolved into public libraries or community colleges, contributing significantly to adult education and the dissemination of practical knowledge.
