McNaughton Test
The McNaughton Test is a legal standard used to determine if a person accused of a crime was legally insane at the time of the offense. It asks whether, due to mental illness, the person knew what they were doing or understood that it was wrong. If they can demonstrate they lacked this understanding because of their mental state, they may be found not criminally responsible. Essentially, it evaluates whether mental illness prevented the person from comprehending their actions or distinguishing right from wrong during the crime.
