McGregor's theory

McGregor’s Theory, known as Theory X and Theory Y, explains two contrasting ways managers might view employees. Theory X assumes employees dislike work, need strict supervision, and prefer to be directed. In contrast, Theory Y sees employees as motivated, responsible, and capable of self-direction if given meaningful work and trust. These perceptions influence management styles: Theory X tends to be authoritarian, while Theory Y promotes a participative approach. Understanding these theories helps managers create environments that motivate employees effectively, recognizing their potential and fostering engagement.
