MBD proteins

MBD proteins (Methyl-CpG-binding domain proteins) are molecules in our cells that recognize and attach to specific DNA regions where cytosine bases are methylated—meaning they've been tagged with a chemical mark called a methyl group. These proteins help regulate gene activity by interpreting these methylation signals, turning genes on or off as needed. They play a key role in gene expression, development, and maintaining normal cell function. When MBD proteins don't work properly, it can lead to issues like developmental disorders or contribute to diseases such as cancer.
