Mayan languages
Mayan languages are a group of about 30 related indigenous languages spoken primarily in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Guatemala, Belize, and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. They belong to the Mayan language family, which has a long history dating back over 4,000 years. These languages are known for their complex hieroglyphic writing system, rich oral traditions, and diverse dialects. Despite challenges from dominant languages like Spanish, many Mayan communities continue to preserve and teach their languages, which are vital to their cultural identity and heritage.
