Mayan epigraphy

Mayan epigraphy is the study of the ancient Maya's writing system, which consists of hieroglyphic symbols representing sounds, words, and ideas. These glyphs were used to record historical events, rulers’ achievements, rituals, and beliefs, often inscribed on stone monuments, ceramics, and codices. By analyzing these inscriptions, archaeologists and linguists can understand Maya history, politics, and culture. The Mayan script is highly complex, combining logograms and phonetic symbols, but decipherment efforts over the past century have uncovered much of its structure, revealing a sophisticated writing system that connects language, history, and worldview.
