Maya creation myth

The Maya creation myth describes how the world and humanity were formed. In the beginning, there was only the sky and the ocean. The gods Tepeu and Gucumatz (also known as Kukulkan) decided to create Earth. They formed the land and filled it with vegetation, animals, and eventually humans. However, the first humans made of mud were weak and fell apart. The gods then created humans from wood, but these beings were soulless and could not worship them. Finally, the gods crafted humans from maize, which were strong and able to think, speak, and honor the gods, thus achieving the desired creation.
