Max Weber's Three Types of Authority
Max Weber identified three types of authority that explain how leaders gain acceptance and control. Traditional authority is based on long-standing customs and beliefs, like monarchy or religious leaders. Charismatic authority arises from a leader's personal charm, vision, or heroism, inspiring devotion (e.g., revolutionary leaders). Legal-rational authority relies on formal rules, laws, and procedures, typical of modern governments and organizations, where authority comes from a person’s role rather than personal traits. These types show different ways authority can be justified and maintained in society.
