Mauritania (present-day)

Mauritania is a country located in West Africa, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Senegal to the southwest, Mali to the east and southeast, and Algeria to the northeast. Its capital is Nouakchott. The country has a diverse culture influenced by Arab and Berber traditions, as well as sub-Saharan African elements. Mauritania's economy relies on agriculture, livestock, and mining, particularly iron ore. Despite its vast desert landscapes, it faces challenges such as poverty and a history of political instability. Additionally, Mauritania is notable for being one of the last countries to abolish slavery, officially ending the practice in 1981.
