Maurice Duplessis

Maurice Duplessis was a Canadian politician who served as Premier of Quebec mainly between 1936-1939 and 1944-1959. He was known for his conservative and traditionalist views, emphasizing religious values, maintaining close ties with the Roman Catholic Church, and promoting economic development through resource extraction. His leadership is often associated with a period called "La Grande Noirceur" (The Great Darkness) due to restrictions on civil liberties, influence of religion in government, and limited social reforms. Despite criticism, he also helped modernize Quebec’s infrastructure and kept the province stable during his time in office.
