Maurice Bishop

Maurice Bishop was a prominent Grenadian revolutionary and political leader who served as the Prime Minister of Grenada from 1979 until 1983. He founded the New Jewel Movement, which overthrew the government in a peaceful revolution, establishing a socialist government aimed at reducing inequality. Bishop's leadership focused on improving education, healthcare, and social services. His tenure was marked by efforts to build a more equitable society, but also by political tensions. In 1983, he was imprisoned during a coup but was later freed. He was killed during a subsequent invasion by U.S. forces, making him a symbol of both resistance and political upheaval in the Caribbean.
