matric potential

Matric potential is a measure of how tightly water is held in the soil by the forces of adhesion and cohesion. It indicates how easily plants can access water in the soil. When the soil is very dry, water is held tightly, resulting in a low or negative matric potential, making it harder for plants to draw water. Conversely, when the soil is moist, the matric potential is higher, and water is more available to plants. Think of it as the "hold" or attraction the soil has on water, influencing water movement and availability in the environment.
