Maternal PKU
Maternal PKU (Phenylketonuria) occurs when a woman with this inherited disorder doesn't properly process phenylalanine, an amino acid found in many proteins. During pregnancy, high levels of phenylalanine can cross the placenta and harm the developing baby, leading to serious birth defects, brain problems, or developmental delays. To prevent this, women with PKU must follow a special, low-phenylalanine diet and monitor their blood levels closely before and during pregnancy. Effective management greatly reduces risks, helping ensure a healthier pregnancy and baby.
