martyr complex
A martyr complex is a psychological pattern where a person continually sacrifices their own needs or well-being, often to gain sympathy, validation, or a sense of moral superiority. They might see themselves as enduring suffering for a greater cause, sometimes to the point of ignoring their own happiness or health. This behavior can stem from feelings of guilt, low self-esteem, or a desire to be seen as morally upright. While their sacrifices can appear noble, it may lead to unhealthy relationships or emotional exhaustion if they consistently prioritize others’ needs over their own.
