Market Failure in the Arts
Market failure in the arts occurs when the free market cannot adequately provide or support cultural products like music, theater, or visual arts. This often happens because artistic endeavors may not be profitable enough for private investors, leading to underfunding. Many artistic works also offer public benefits, such as cultural enrichment and community identity, which are hard to quantify in monetary terms. As a result, without public funding or investment, important artistic contributions may be overlooked or unavailable, limiting access and diversity in the arts.
