Marja'

A Marja' is a top religious authority in Twelver Shia Islam, recognized for deep knowledge of Islamic law and theology. Followers, known as "marja'iyyat," look to a Marja' for guidance on how to practice their faith, including daily rituals, ethical decisions, and religious duties. The Marja' issues legal rulings called "fatwas" that are respected and followed by their followers. Their authority is based on their scholarship, piety, and lineage, and they serve as spiritual leaders, helping interpret and apply Islamic teachings in contemporary life.
