Marine carbon cycle

The marine carbon cycle involves the movement of carbon through the ocean, atmosphere, and living organisms. Phytoplankton (tiny ocean plants) absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. When they die or are consumed, some carbon sinks to the deep ocean as organic matter or gets stored in sediments. The ocean also exchanges carbon with the atmosphere—acting as a sink that absorbs CO₂, helping to regulate global climate. This cycle is vital for balancing atmospheric CO₂ levels and supporting marine life, playing a key role in Earth's overall climate system.
