Mariel Boatlift

The Mariel Boatlift was a mass migration of approximately 125,000 Cubans to the United States in 1980. Starting in April, Cubans boaters made their way to Florida, mainly arriving at Miami. This event was triggered by economic hardships and political tensions in Cuba, as well as the Cuban government's decision to allow certain residents to leave. The influx significantly impacted U.S. immigration policy, local communities, and the economy, leading to new challenges and discussions about immigration and refugee policies. It remains a key moment in U.S.-Cuba relations and the history of Cuban-American migration.
