Mari (ancient city)

Mari was an important ancient city located in present-day Syria, flourishing around 2900–1750 BCE. It was a major center of trade, culture, and politics in Mesopotamia, known for its impressive architecture, including grand palaces, temples, and a rich array of cuneiform writings. These writings provide valuable insights into early governance, diplomacy, and daily life. Mari's strategic location along the Euphrates River made it a crucial hub connecting different cultures. The city was ultimately destroyed and abandoned, but archaeological excavations have uncovered its historical significance, revealing details about early urban civilization and Mesopotamian culture.
