March 1st Movement
The March 1st Movement was a significant protest in Korea on March 1, 1919, against Japanese colonial rule. After Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910, Koreans sought independence and cultural preservation. Inspired by global ideas of self-determination, Koreans organized peaceful demonstrations, demanding independence and respect for their national identity. The movement spread nationwide, involving thousands of citizens, but was met with violent repression by Japanese authorities. It is regarded as a pivotal moment that galvanized Korean nationalism, strengthening resolve for independence, which was eventually achieved in 1945 after World War II.
