Mammy

The term "Mammy" historically refers to a stereotypical image of Black women in the United States, often depicted as loyal, nurturing, and self-sacrificing domestic servants who took care of white families. Originating during the slavery era, this portrayal reinforced racial and gender stereotypes by emphasizing traits like obedience and motherhood. While once a common cultural trope, it is now recognized as offensive and racist because it dehumanizes Black women and perpetuates harmful biases. Today, the term is generally considered outdated and inappropriate outside of historical discussion, and its use is viewed as disrespectful and hurtful.
