Maki-e

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique that involves applying powdered gold, silver, or other metals to lacquered surfaces to create intricate designs. Artisans first apply multiple layers of black or colored lacquer, then carefully sprinkle or brush the metallic powders onto the surface, often using fine brushes or tools. Afterward, a clear lacquer layer is added to protect the design. This craftsmanship results in highly detailed, luxurious patterns on items such as writing instruments, boxes, or furniture. Maki-e showcases Japan’s rich heritage of combining art, craftsmanship, and durable materials, producing elegant, collectible pieces.
