Makhnovshchina

Makhnovshchina refers to the period during the Russian Civil War (1917–1923) when the Makhnovists, a Bolshevik-led revolutionary movement led by Nestor Makhno, established an anarchist-leaning territory mainly in Ukraine. They organized a decentralized, self-governing society emphasizing voluntary cooperation, anti-authoritarianism, and peasant self-management. The movement aimed to resist both Bolshevik centralization and white nationalist attempts to restore Tsarist rule. While they fought against various forces, their emphasis was on creating a stateless, libertarian society based on anarchist principles. Their impact highlights the complex, multifaceted nature of revolutionary Ukraine during that turbulent period.
