Main Sail

The main sail is the largest sail on a sailing ship, attached to the main mast. Its primary function is to catch the wind, generating the force needed to propel the boat forward. By adjusting its angle and tension—called trimming—the crew can control the boat’s speed and direction. The main sail works together with other sails, like the jib, to optimize performance based on wind conditions. In essence, it’s the main tool a sailor uses to harness wind energy, allowing the vessel to move efficiently across the water.
