Mailo land tenure

Mailo land tenure is a system primarily used in Kenya that combines private ownership with government oversight. It allows individuals or organizations to own land through long-term leases from the government, typically lasting 99 years or more. Landholders have rights similar to freehold ownership, such as building and transferring property, but the land still technically belongs to the government until the lease expires or is renewed. This system offers security of tenure while enabling the government to regulate land use and promote sustainable development.
