Madhavdeva

Madhavdeva (1489–1596) was a prominent Assamese poet, philosopher, and saint of the Bhakti movement, known for promoting devotional worship of Lord Krishna. He is considered the founder of the Sankardev sect and was instrumental in shaping Assamese religious culture, emphasizing love, humility, and devotion over ritualism. His extensive literary works, including the classic "Kirtan Ghosa," mixed spiritual teachings with regional language, making spiritual practices accessible. Madhavdeva played a key role in fostering social harmony and cultural identity in Assam through his teachings and writings, leaving a lasting impact on Assamese Hindu tradition.
