Macular Hole Repair

Macular hole repair is a procedure to fix a small break in the central part of the retina called the macula, which affects sharp, straight-ahead vision. The surgeon performs a vitrectomy, removing the gel-like vitreous from the eye, and may peel the thin membrane over the macula to relieve tension. Sometimes, a gas bubble is inserted to gently press against the macula, helping it close and heal. Patients usually need to keep their head in a specific position for a few days afterward to help the retina heal properly. This procedure often improves vision or stabilizes it in affected individuals.
