Macrouridae

Macrouridae, commonly known as grenadiers or rattails, are a family of deep-sea fish characterized by their elongated bodies and tapering tails. They inhabit deep ocean floors worldwide and have specialized adaptations to survive in extreme pressures and low light. Typically, they possess large heads, big eyes for detecting scarce light, and soft, flexible bones. These fish are mostly benthic or benthopelagic, feeding on invertebrates and small fish. Despite their mysterious nature, they are important components of deep-sea ecosystems and are occasionally caught as bycatch in deep-sea fishing industries.
