macrophage activation syndrome (MAS)

Macrophage Activation Syndrome (MAS) is a serious condition where the immune system becomes overactive, causing immune cells called macrophages to release excessive inflammatory substances. This leads to widespread inflammation, fever, liver and spleen enlargement, blood cell shortages, and potential organ damage. MAS is often associated with underlying autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. It requires prompt medical treatment to control the immune response, prevent complications, and restore balance in the immune system.
