Macpherson Constitution
The Macpherson Constitution was a law introduced in Nigeria in 1951 to allow more local participation in government. It aimed to gradually give Nigerians greater control by expanding legislative councils and increasing Nigerian representation, while still maintaining British oversight. The constitution divided Nigeria into regions with their own governments, encouraging regional development and self-rule. Essentially, it was a step toward independence, balancing local autonomy with British interests, and laying the groundwork for Nigeria’s political self-governance.
