Machicolation

Machicolation refers to an architectural feature found in medieval castles and fortifications. It consists of projecting platforms with openings or slots, typically located above walls or gateways. These openings allowed defenders to drop projectiles, boiling liquids, or debris onto attackers while keeping themselves protected from return fire. Machicolation served as both a tactical advantage in defense and a symbol of a castle's strength and status. Over time, this structure became a hallmark of fortification design during the late Middle Ages, enhancing the defensive capabilities of castles against siege warfare.
