MacConkey Agar
MacConkey Agar is a specialized nutrient-rich substance used in laboratories to grow and identify certain bacteria. It contains ingredients that support bacterial growth and others that help distinguish bacteria based on their ability to ferment, or process, sugars like lactose. Bacteria that ferment lactose turn the medium a pink or red color, indicating they are capable of this process. Those that don't ferment remain colorless or take on the original color of the medium. This helps scientists identify and classify bacteria, particularly those that can cause infections or diseases.
