Mabo v Queensland (No 2)

Mabo v Queensland (No 2) was a landmark 1992 Australian High Court case recognizing that Indigenous Australians have traditional land rights that predate and survive colonial conquest. Eddie Mabo and others argued that their ancestors owned the land, challenging the Queensland government's claim of sovereignty. The court unanimously agreed, ruling that the doctrine of terra nullius (land belonging to no one) was invalid, and that Indigenous peoples have rights to their land based on their traditional laws and customs. This decision led to the abolition of terra nullius and the creation of the Native Title Act, acknowledging Indigenous Australians' ongoing connection to their land.
