Mabo (Eddie Mabo)
Eddie Mabo was an Indigenous Australian from the Meriam people who fought for the recognition of Aboriginal land rights. His landmark legal case, known as the Mabo Case, challenged the Australian legal system's failure to recognize Indigenous Australians' traditional connection to their land. In 1992, the High Court of Australia ruled in favor of Mabo, acknowledging that Indigenous peoples had their own connection to land prior to British colonization. This decision led to the legal recognition of native title, allowing Indigenous Australians to claim rights to their ancestral lands and significantly changed Australian property law, emphasizing the importance of Indigenous sovereignty.
