Maastrichtian formations
Maastrichtian formations refer to geological layers from the Maastrichtian age, which is the last part of the Late Cretaceous period, around 72 to 66 million years ago. These formations are composed of rocks and sediments that were deposited during that time, often containing fossils of dinosaurs, ancient plants, and marine life. Studying these layers helps scientists understand Earth's history, including the environment just before the mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs. The name "Maastrichtian" comes from the city of Maastricht in the Netherlands, where rocks from this age were first studied.
