Maasai land rights
Maasai land rights refer to the claims and legal recognition of land traditionally used and inhabited by the Maasai people, an indigenous community in Kenya and Tanzania. Historically, Maasai people practiced semi-nomadic pastoralism, relying on these lands for grazing livestock. Over time, governments and external interests have designated parts of Maasai land for conservation, development, or settlement, leading to disputes and displacement. While some legal frameworks recognize Maasai land ownership or usage rights, enforcement varies. Efforts are ongoing to secure and respect their ancestral land rights, balancing development needs with the Maasai’s traditional connection to their land.
