MS Estonia was a large passenger ferry built in the early 1990s that operated in the Baltic Sea, mainly between Estonia and Sweden. On September 28, 1994, during a storm, it capsized and sank near Sweden, resulting in the tragic loss of 852 lives. The disaster was caused by a combination of rough sea conditions and design flaws that led to the vessel taking on water and eventually sinking. The event remains one of the deadliest shipwrecks in European waters, prompting improvements in maritime safety protocols and ship design standards.
