
M. Carey Thomas
M. Carey Thomas was a pioneering American educator and librarian, born in 1857. She was the second woman to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig and played a key role in advancing women's higher education. As president of Bryn Mawr College from 1894 to 1922, she worked to elevate the institution’s academic standards and promote women’s intellectual independence. Thomas was also a noted librarian, advocating for open access to information. Her leadership helped shape the modern landscape of women’s education and academic leadership in the United States.
