Lymphangioleiomyomatosis
Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung disease that mostly affects women, particularly those of childbearing age. It occurs when smooth muscle cells grow abnormally in the lungs and lymphatic system, leading to cysts and airway blockages. This can cause breathing difficulties, coughing, and chest pain. LAM is often associated with a genetic condition called tuberous sclerosis. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and may include medications or oxygen therapy. Early diagnosis and monitoring are important to maintain lung function and quality of life. LAM is one of the conditions included under the broader category of interstitial lung diseases.
