Lyctidae (powderpost beetles)
Lyctidae, commonly known as powderpost beetles, are wood-boring insects that infest and damage hardwoods. Their larvae feed on the starch within the wood, creating small tunnels and leaving behind a fine, powdery frass as evidence of activity. These beetles are often attracted to seasoned, untreated hardwoods like oak, walnut, and hickory. Infestations can weaken the structural integrity of wooden items, furniture, or flooring if untreated. Identification typically involves noting the presence of tiny exit holes and fine powder. Control involves proper wood treatment, moisture management, and, in some cases, professional extermination to prevent or halt damage.
