lung abscess

A lung abscess is a localized pocket of infection and pus that forms within the lung tissue, often resulting from bacteria or other microorganisms that invade the lung. It typically develops after an infection like pneumonia or aspiration, where foreign material, food, or saliva enters the lungs. Symptoms may include cough, fever, chest pain, and coughing up foul-smelling sputum. Diagnosis involves imaging, such as a chest X-ray or CT scan. Treatment usually involves antibiotics to eradicate the infection, and in some cases, drainage or surgery may be necessary if the abscess doesn't respond to medication.
