Lunar volcanism

Lunar volcanism refers to the volcanic activity that occurred on the Moon billions of years ago, when molten rock called magma erupted onto its surface. Unlike Earth, the Moon's volcanic activity was less frequent and long-lasting. The eruptions created large flat areas called basalts, forming lunar plains known as "maria." These volcanic events happened when the Moon's interior was still hot and partially melted, but now, the Moon is mostly geologically inactive. The volcanic features we see today are remnants of this ancient activity, giving clues about the Moon’s interior and early geological history.
