Ludwig's angina
Ludwig's angina is a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that affects the floor of the mouth and the underfloor areas of the tongue. It typically arises from dental infections, especially of the lower molars. The infection causes swelling and redness, leading to difficulty swallowing, speaking, and breathing due to pressure on the airway. It can spread rapidly, so prompt medical treatment with antibiotics, and sometimes surgical drainage, is essential to prevent airway obstruction and other complications. Early recognition and intervention are crucial for effective management and to ensure the patient’s safety.
