Lubyanka Prison

Lubyanka Prison was a notorious detention facility in Moscow, Russia, operational from 1898 until its closure in 2006. Located beneath the Lubyanka Building, it was originally used by the Tsarist secret police and later by the Soviet secret services, notably the KGB. The prison gained a reputation for holding political prisoners, often under harsh conditions, and was associated with interrogations, executions, and political repression. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the prison was closed and repurposed, and the Lubyanka Building now houses the headquarters of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).
