Lower Extremity Amputation

Lower extremity amputation involves surgically removing part or all of the leg or foot due to severe injury, infection, poor blood flow, or disease such as diabetes. The goal is to eliminate pain, prevent infection from spreading, or improve function. The level of amputation varies depending on the condition, ranging from toes to above the knee. Afterward, patients often undergo rehabilitation to adjust to movement with prosthetics or to improve mobility. Although it’s a significant procedure, advances in surgical techniques and rehabilitation have greatly improved outcomes and quality of life for affected individuals.
