Louis Delgrès

Louis Delgrès was a French military officer and revolutionary who fought against the re-establishment of slavery in the early 19th century. Born in Guadeloupe, he passionately opposed the French government’s decision to restore slavery after it had been abolished. When authorities threatened to re-impose slavery, Delgrès led a courageous but ultimately tragic uprising in 1802 to resist this policy. He is remembered as a symbol of resistance, liberty, and the fight for human rights, especially in Caribbean history, embodying the struggle against oppression and for justice.
